Abstract

Four-stroke-cycle engines.-An even number of radial cylinders greater than six is disposed in three or more planes at right-angles to the crankshaft, the cylinders in each row comprising a unit. The cylinders in each plane are unequally spaced, the smallest angle between two adjacent cylinders being equal to the angular interval between successive ignitions. Fig. 1 shows one group of ten cylinders of an engine having forty cylinders arranged in four planes or groups. The angle betwewn adjacent cylinders is 18‹ or 54‹ and the firing interval is 18‹. An engine having thirtysix cylinders is described, the six cylinders of each group being disposed as shown in Fig. 8. The smaller angle between adjacent cylinders is 40‹ and the larger angle 100‹. The firing interval is 20‹.
