Four-stroke-cycle engines.-In an engine having not less than thirty-two cylinders, an even number of equally-spaced radial cylinders is disposed in each of an even number of planes at right-angles to the crank-shaft the interval between successive ignitions being equal to 720‹ divided by the total number of cylinders. Engines are described having (1) thirty-two cylinders in four planes and a four throw crankshaft the pins of which, when viewed in. end elevation, each make with the adjacent pins angles of 67¢ and 112¢‹ respectively, (2) thirtysix cylinders in six planes, and a six-throw crankshaft in which the crank pins are arranged in three plants separated by angles of 40‹ as shown in Figs. 11, 12, and (3) forty cylinders in four planes as shown in Fig. 20 and a four-throw crank-shaft with crank-pins separated by 90‹, as shown in Fig. 22. Further, an engine may comprise six cylinders in each of eight or ten planes.
