Abstract

158,745. Smith, B. S. Nov. 24, 1919. Tufted fabrics. - Double pile Axminster carpets &c. are woven in a vertical loom, by the method shown in Figs. 22 to 27, the connected fabrics being split by a knife 160, Fig. 19, to form two fabrics. Four sheds are formed by means of two sets 53, 54 of stationary warps, and four sets 48, 49 of crossing warps, into which pairs of back and face wefts 122, 123, 125, 126 are introduced by means of four needles, after which short lengths of coloured wool 276 are drawn between the warps by grippers 287, 288 from jacquard-controlled wool-selectors 311 or from bobbins and are cut off by means of an oscillating knife 300 coacting with a fixed knife 310, after which face wefts are introduced and the ends of the coloured wool tufts 276 are folded inwards by means of folders 278. The warps 48, 49 are then shed, !and the process repeated, the tufts in the cut and finished fabrics being bound in by the face wefts as shown in Fig. 31. In a modification, in addition to the two sets of stationary warps 406, Figs. 33 and 34a, there aro two sets of face weft binding-warps 408, and two sets of back and face weft binding-warps 410, the pile tufts 276 being bound in by the face wefts 125 and hidden at the back bv the back wefts 222, the fabric having a ribbed back. A loom for weav. ing the fabric is described.
