Abstract

1838. Hollingworth, E., [Crompton & Knowles Loom Works]. Feb. 5. Pile fabrics, such as mohair and like plush mats and rugs, are woven integral with a backing and comprise pile warps M, M<1>, stuffer warps S, binding-warps B, and four wefts 11, 12, 13, 14 between successive crossings of the binding-warps, the wefts 11, 13 serving to retain the pile tufts, which are formed alternately by adjacent pile warps, the weft 12 separating the stuffer warps into two portions and the weft 14 lying between the lower stuffer warps and the binding-warps. The active pile warps M of mohair or other long staple wool pass over alternate pairs of wefts 11, 13, and are formed into loops and cut by knives 15 inserted at each third or idle pick. In weaving rugs, the centre portion may have pile formed by curled or otherwise manipulated warps, while the borders and ends have pile formed by straight or untreated warps, andfor this purpose two pile warps M, M<1> are used, each of which becomes operative at the desired times under control of jacquard or like mechanism. The wefts may be inserted in pairs 11, 12 and 13, 14 in a twoshuttle loom, and preferably there are eight warps to each reed dent, two warps M, M<1>, two warps B, and four warps S.
