[Class 142.(ii)] In the production of Axminster carpets and like tufted pile fabrics with a ribbed back surface, two weft inserting needles or carriers N<1>, N<2> are used in staggered relation and on either side of a supplementary slay S<1>, the lower one being nearer the fell of the'fabric. In Fig. 1, A represents the stuffer warp and B, C the chain warps which form sheds above and below warp A. S<2> represents the main slay. After the needles have been withdrawn the slay S' moves forward to beat up the weft W<1> inserted by the needle N' and then falls to a resting position as shown in Fig. 2. The upper weft thread W<2> inserted by needle N<1> is meanwhile held back, thereby leaving space for insertion of the tuft yarn T through the warp threads. The slay S<2> then presses forward the weft W<2> while spool X is raised to leave sufficient tuft yarn projecting from the bottom of tubes T' for another insertion after severance of the yarn T. The slay S<2> then returns, the depending ends of the tuft yarn are turned up by a comb or under reed and the warp C takes the place of the warp B, which falls to a lower position (Fig. 4). The needles N<1>, N<2> are again inserted, but the slay S<1> remains at rest, while the weft W<3> carried by the needle N' is inserted into the upper shed and beaten up by the slay S<2>. The warp C then falls to form a lower shed, the warp B rises and the operation is repeated.
