[Classes 142 (ii) and 142 (iv)] Each alternate beat of the lay pile threads 17, Fig. 5, are raised, a pile wire 3 is inserted and simutaneously a top shot of weft 1 is inserted and at each of the other beats of the lay, a top weft is inserted to bind in the pile loops. A bottom weft 2 is inserted simultaneously with one or both of the top shots. In a modification wherein there is only one insertion of weft to each transverse pile row, at the same time that a pile wire is inserted, a weft 1, Fig. 4, is inserted over the unraised pile threads, and to enable pile warps of the same colour to be raised in successive transverse rows as at 15, 16 for the variously-coloured pile threads are arranged in duplicate groups 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14. Bottom wefts 2 may also be used. Plain, mottled, or striped fabrics, or fabrics with a printed warp may be made. Binder warps 5 are used, and in some cases stuffer warps also. The weft may be inserted by a shuttle, or needle or by two of these moving in unison. Transverse pile wires may be inserted at the same speed and by the same mechanism as the weft inserting needles, or inserted by separate mechanism enabling the wires to be withdrawn more slowly than the needles. Longitudinal hooks such as described in Specification 175,450, [Class 142 (ii)], or other longitudinal hooks or wires may be used, and Brussels or Wilton carpets may be produced.
