Abstract

Rolling. - Bars are rolled in a a universal mill by a process in which, at each pass, the corners of the material are rolled down simultaneously, the shape of the cross-section remaining unaltered. As shown in Fig. 1, the material w is rolled down by a series of convex rolls a<1>, b<1>, c<1>, d<1>, &c., while the rolls of the final passes are shaped as shown at 3 and 4 to produce a cylindrical bar. By altering the last pass other sections may be rolled. In a modification, Fig. 2, rolls of double cone sec. tion are used whereby the reduction of cross-section may be effected with fewer passes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a further modification in which plain cylindrical rolls are used. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
