Abstract

195,712. Maschinenfabrik Sack Ges., and Gassen, J. Dec. 29, 1921. Skew-rolling; rolling tubes.-Tubes, particularly those with thin walls, are rolled from solid bars or thick-walled tubes by a skew mill employing a mandrel and with separate rolls for the preliminary and finishing stages of the operation so arranged as to reduce the stresses applied to the work. In one arrangement the preliminary reduction is effected by cylindrical rolls a, c inclined to produce a converging pass as shown in the Figure and skewed in a plane at right-angles to that of the paper to effect the feed. Finishing is effected by inclined and skewed conical rolls b, d coacting with a mandre: f. The cylindrical rolls have hollowed ends to clear the conical rolls. The angles of skew may be different for the two sets of rolls which may each consist of more than two rolls. In modifications, the cylindrical rolls are replaced by arrangements of conical or disc rolls.
