Abstract
156,352. Wylie, H. N. Oct. 18, 1919. Metal and fibrous pipes and tubes. - A tubular member, such as an aeroplane strut, made of sheet metal, papier mache, compressed fibre, or other material, comprises a nose plate 4, bent only in easy curves, a fairing 6, and a web or stiffener 5, the edges of the fairing being secured in a groove formed between the outside edge 8 of the nose and the edge 9 of the web. A packing strip 7 may be inserted. Modifications are described in which (a) the edges of the fairing 6 are stepped so that its facelies flush with the outer face of the nose plate 4, and (b) the packing strip is omitted and the edges 9 are stepped to form the groove into which the edges of the fairing 6 fit. The fairing may be secured to the edges 8 and 9 by rivetting, or by wires passing through the edges 8, 9 and the, edges of the fairing 6 from one side of the tubular member to the other. The nose plate 4 and the fairing 6 may be reinforced by a web or webs and may be in more than one part.
