Abstract
A process for the cultivation of anchorage-dependent cells in which microcarriers in the cell culture are used is described. These microcarriers have on their surface an amount of positively charged chemical groups such that an exchange capacity which is in the range from 0.1 to 4.5 milliequivalents per gram of dry, untreated microcarrier is ensured. This exchange capacity ensures good growth of the cells, and the cells are cultivated in a culture medium in which the microcarrier is suspended, and the cell culture is left under conditions such that growth of the cells is elicited. The cells obtained in this cultivation process can be harvested, or by-products of the cell growth, such as, for example, viruses, vaccines, hormones, interferon or other by-products of cell growth, can be isolated. The microcarriers and process for their production are also described.
