Abstract
1525954 Controlling light STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 20 Jan 1976 [30 Jan 1976] 4087/75 Heading G2F An image converter comprises, in order in a stack, a first electrode 19, a liquid crystal layer 21, a photo-conductive layer 12 and a second electrode 10, the latter being structured, e.g. in the form of spaced parallel strips electrically in common, so as not to cover the entire photo-conductive layer and to reduce the dark capacitance thereof, so that a greater proportion of an A.C. potential difference applied between the electrodes is developed across the photo-conductive layer. When an image is incident on the photo-conductor there is local increase in capacitance due to lateral conductivity in addition to the reduction in resistance so that the potential difference is more effectively transferred to the liquid crystal layer. As shown, the layer 21 is a 90 degree twisted nematic layer between an aligning layer 20 of oblique evaporated SiO and a second aligning layer 16. Polarizing layers 15 and 18 are provided, and in some cases layers 15 and 16 may be the same layer. A dielectric opaque CdTe blocking layer 13 separates layer 12 from a mosaic Al reflector 14. The strips of electrode 10 are not necessarily transparent and may be 5Á wide with a pitch of 15Á.
