Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a high bright and dark light current ratio so as to assure on-off and to increase a production margin by using a liquid crystal layer having bistability and a photoconductor layer having a current rectifying property. CONSTITUTION:The bistable liquid crystal layer 101, a photoseparating mirror 102 and the photoconductor layer 103 having the current rectifying property are sandwiched by transparent substrates 105 provided with transparent conductive films 104 and non-reflection coatings 106 are formed on the outside of the transparent substrates. This current rectifying property is generally imparted by a junction and barrier and is derived from the prevention of carrier injection at the time of reverse biasing. The high dark resistance equiv. to the equiv. resistance of the liquid crystal is realized by the low dark current arising from the carrier blocking; in addition, the large bright and dark light current ratio is obtd. The change in the partial voltage of the liquid crystal layer which arises in accordance with the on-off of writing light is thereby increased more than the change in the partial voltage generated by an ordinary photoconductive effect.
