Abstract

1521774 Shielded containers W R HOUSHOLDER and N L GREER 16 Sept 1975 [19 Sept 1974] 37929/77 Divided out of 1521773 Heading B4Q A double containment pressure vessel for use in a container for nuclear fuels, e.g. a container as forms the subject-matter of the Specification 1,521,773, comprises two tubular vessels 132, 140 each of which has a closed bottom end 134, 142 and a flanged upper end 136, 152, a closure head 54, 137 bolted to each flanged upper end, and gas seal means 56 located between each closure head and associated flanged upper end, the vessel 132 nesting within the vessel 140. Gas passage means is provided through each closure head 54, 137 and a gas relief valve 58 is mounted in a coupling 60 in each of the coupling 60 in each of the passage means. These valves provide a controlled sleeve of any gas which may be produced from the nuclear fuels contained in a conventional vented polyethylene tube (not shown) carried within the container.
