Abstract
1,024,089. Fuelling reactors. ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE (SERVICE NATIONAL). Feb. 19, 1965 [March 6, 1964], No. 7323/65. Heading G6C. A machine A for fuelling a reactor B having a standpipe 3 and charge flow 4 comprises a bottom unit 6 and top unit 8, the unit 6 running on rails 5 and the unit 8 having running gear 32 engaging rails 34 on the shielding 16 of the unit 6. A chamber 10 has a spigot 12 connectable to the standpipe 3 and contains a drum and winch for storage and handling of the fuel elements (not shown). The chamber 10 connects through an opening 13 and valve 14 in the shielding 16 with a chamber 18 formed in the shielding 20 of the unit 8, the chamber 18 having an opening 22 controlled by a valve 24. The chamber 18 serves as a storage for standpipe closure flaps, loading arms &c. The two units 6, 8 may be separated when pressurized with reactor coolant after closing the valves 14, 24, the unit 8 being moved transversely in the direction F. In order to maintain the radiation shielding at the opening 13 the unit 8 has connected thereto a radiation shield 28 having running gear 32<SP>1</SP> engaging the rails 34, the unit 8 being stopped in its movement in the direction F when the shield 28 is centred above the opening and a shielding ring 38 on the shield lowered to engage the shielding 16. The shield 28 is disconnected from the unit 8 and the latter continues its movement in the direction F until it arrives on rails 34<SP>1</SP> on a shield 26 supported by a bracket 30, the rails 34<SP>1</SP> forming a continuation of the rails 34. A shielding ring 25 on the unit 8 is lowered to engage the shield 26 and the latter is locked to the unit, whereupon the unit having its opening 22 covered by the shield may be removed by a crane. .
