Abstract

1,190,223. Tank wagons. UNION TANK CAR CO. 31 July, 1967 [1 Aug., 1966], No. 34987/67. Heading B7L. A railroad tank car comprises a cylindrical container having a discharge opening 14, Fig. 2, in the lower surface 12 thereof and valve means 15 controlling flow through the opening 14, the latter including a housing 20 projecting upwardly through the opening 14 and bolted at 52 to an annular ring 50 welded to the tank bottom around the opening. The housing has a horizontal channel 25 terminating in an entrance port 23 and controlled by a ball valve 30, and a vertical passage 26 communicating with an outlet fitting 28 welded to a plate 60, bolted at 62 to the ring 50. The valve 30 is rotatable about a vertical axis 32 by interconnected coaxial stem members 41, 43 the latter having an end 45 exposed on the outside of the tank for grasping by a suitable tool. The valve has a horizontal flow passage 33, the lower surface 34 of which is below the level 13 of the lower surface interior 12 of the tank. Moreover the valve is rotatably supported in sealing gaskets 31.
