Rotary furnaces; charging. - A rotary drying drum is formed with an inner and an outer shell and an extension neck secured to the inner shell and projecting within an internal cylindrical shell provided within the feed head; a gas-conveying flue leads into the opposite side of the feed head and the shell extension. As shown, the drier comprises inner and outer rotary shells 10, 11 and a stationary feed head 12 into which extends a furnace flue 13 conveying gases to the inner shell while the upper portion of the feed head communicates with an exhaust flue leading to the casing of a fan which withdraws the gases from the space between the inner and outer shells, into which space the feed shoot 18 carried by the head discharges the material to be dried. The gases pass along the inner shell and at its further end escape into the space between the two shells and pass back to the feed end. The shell 10 is provided with a cylindrical extension 28 surrounding the end of the furnace flue and itself surrounded by a cylinder 27 formed within the feed head. Air passes in through the narrow opening in the wall of the feed head surrounding the furnace flue and is partly utilized in completing the combustion of the furnace gases within the shell 10. At the rear of the feed head, a circular flange forms with the cylinder 27 an annular opening 19, the lower half of which is covered by a plate 29; the flange carries a bearing-ring 20 forming a bearing for an L-shaped ring 21 adjustably bolted to the outer shell 11. The feed-shoot delivers the material to an inclined feed-plate 31 the lower end of which is connected to the ends of the plate 29. Inspection doors 32, 33 and covered hand-holes in the front of the feed head are provided.
