Abstract

10,350. Ruggles, W. B. April 27. Furnace and kiln fire-places; casings and walls; air, supplying. - A portable furnace, having around its combustion chamber a jacket which feeds heated air thereto, is combined on one platform with a rotary drying-kiln and with an internal-combustion engine providing motive power for the rotation and feeding of the drum and the creation of draught. The furnace comprises outer and inner part cylindrical shells 54, 55, a continuation forming an ash-pit being provided for the latter which has also means for supporting a fire-brick lining 57 and a grate. The front is made in three parts with doors and means for supporting a fire-brick front, while a discharge flue projects from the back into a sleeve continuation of a central flue in the rotary kiln. The outer shell is open at the top and air passing in at this part is discharged into the ash-pit. The drying-kiln comprises an outer shell 3 and an inner flue 4 connected thereto by rigid cast-iron straps 22 and flexible links 23, and carries longitudinal lifting-vanes. The flue 4 is extended to form a sleeve 24 enclosing the furnace discharge flue, from which it is spaced apart to provide an air inlet. A stationary hood 25 surrounds the sleeve 24 and the front of the drum, and the gases from the flue 4 pass into the drum at the rear and back into 'a chamber formed by the hood and sleeve, from which they are drawn off by a fan or chimney. Material is fed in by a spout 34 and flat deflecting-plates or flanged buckets on the drum; a conveyer 39 delivers into the spout 34. At the discharge end of the drum, Z-shaped iifting-blades surround an opening in which is a conical deflector 46 with. radial plates. The conveyer, fan, and rotary drum are driven from an internal-combustion engine 16.
