The ring may have a tongue and groove gap 14b, 14c and be outwardly biased by a wave spring 18. The piston is restrained from relative rotation with the cylinder 11 by a connecting member 8 and ring 10, the ring being mounted on a bearing 7 having an axis Y 1 at an angle to shaft axis x with which the cylinder bore is parallel. The piston head may be oil cooled. In a poppet valve I.C. engine the valves 163 are carried in the piston crown and operated by a face cam 169 acting through bucket tappets 167 and roller followers 165. The cam is driven by epicyclic gearing 171 having a stationary sun wheel 170.
