Abstract

1,048,139. Hydraulic reciprocating motors. MACGREGOR-COMARAIN. Aug. 12, 1963 [Aug. 14, 1962], No. 31737/63. Heading F1A. A reversible, high torque, slow-running, hydraulic or air motor, e.g. for operating ship hatch covers, comprises oscillating, single or double acting cylinders 22, 23, 24 pivotally mounted in a casing 1 and each housing a piston 29 integral with a connecting rod 32 guided by a bush 38 and coupled to a crank shaft 6. In the arrangement shown, cylinders 22, 23 are arranged side-by-side and pivoted on a common trunnion 25, and cylinder 24 is displaced 120 degrees, the big-end bearings associated with cylinders 23 and 24 engaging a common crank pin 14. Distribution of fluid is controlled by slide valves 76, Fig. 4 (not shown), one associated with each cylinder, actuated by a cam shaft 68 driven from crank shaft 6. To time the valve gear to prevent hydraulic locking, the chain drive 71 between valve cam shaft 68 and crank shaft 6 engages two eccentrically mounted sprockets 102, 103, Fig. 5 (not shown) arranged so that the chain receives impulses from the sprockets which result in the movement of each valve being . retarded towards the top dead centre position of its associated piston and advanced towards the bottom dead centre. The engine casing 1 forms a reservoir for splash lubrication.
