1507336 Plasma torches INST ELEKTROSVARKI IM E O PATONA AKAD NAUK UKRAIN SSR 15 Oct 1975 [28 Oct 1974)42111/75 Heading H5H A plasma torch has an electrode I with a flat end face 20 and a high melting point insert 2, the end face 20 and side wall 21 of the electrode interconnected by a surface 22 having the shape of a part of the external surface of a torus and a nozzle 3 having a cylindrical internal surface 23 adjoining an end surface 24, a tapered internal surface 25 facing the electrode, the surface between the tapered surface and cylindrical internal surface having the form of a surface of a torus, the diameter of the flat end face of the electrode being 0À4-0À5 of the diameter of the side wall of the electrode and the radius of curvature of the surface between the tapered and cylindrical surfaces of the nozzle being equal to the length of the cylindrical portion of this surface. Preferably the spacing between the electrode and nozzle end faces = 1À5 diameters of the electrode flat face. The nozzle has a cooling fluid chamber 16. The electrode is hollow. The end of the electrode has an internal parabolic protuberance 12 to deflect cooling fluid coming in via tube 14. Thread 18 has passages to give the plasma forming gas a swirling motion.
