Abstract

1,150,951. Arc torches. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 3 June, 1967 [7 June, 1965], No. 24759/66. Heading H5H. [Also in Division H1] In a method of producing radiant heat and/or light in which an arc 10 formed between two electrodes 12, 14 positioned at opposite ends of a transparent tube 20 is passed through a gas which is introduced in a swirling formation through a plurality of passages 26 arranged in circle and is discharged through axial outlets 22, 24 in the electrodes, the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the tube 20 to the total crosssectional area of the outlets 22, 24 is between 2: 1 and 40: 1, and the gas is introduced under conditions satisfying the equation where Mi = gas inlet mach number Dc = 2 x shortest distance between an inlet passage and the tube axis Dq = inside diameter of tube /V T / = gas velocity at inlet /Vp/ = magnitude of component of /V T / perpendicular to tube axis. The gas may be argon, xenon or krypton, and in a practical embodiment (Figs. 3 and 3a, not shown) the electrodes are provided with tungsten inserts and are water-cooled, and the tube 20 is surrounded by a further tube or tubes through which a gas or liquid may be passed for pressure equalization or cooling purposes.
