Abstract

Securing rollers on shafts.-Tin rollers used in connexion with mules in spinning machinery, and pullies or wheels generally, are secured to their shafts by a gib-and-cotter fastening. In one arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the roller a is fitted with an inwardly-projecting boss which fits on the shaft b. A wedge-shaped gib h and a wedgeshaped cotter g pass through a slot formed centrally in the shaft and the boss. The cotter is adjusted and secured by double nuts l on a screwed rod which bears against the gib. A modified arrangement is shown in Fig. 4 which permits axial adjustment of the roller on the shaft. The slot in the boss is wider than the slot in the shaft, and is engaged by the wider portion g<1> of the cotter. In the position shown, the end of the shaft b is flush with the end of the boss, but by reversing the gib and cotter from the positions shown in Fig. 4 into those shown in Fig. 1, the part g<1> will engage the opposite end of the slot in the boss, and in this position the shaft will project slightly beyond the end of the boss.
