Abstract

150,013. Sampson, C. March 25, 1919. Lamp signals displayed from balloons; codesignalling mechanism.-Electric lamps supported by a captive balloon are adapted to be illuminated intermittently to give a marine distress signal. The balloon 15 carrying the lamp 13 is secured to the cable 12 leading from the winch 11. The lamp is automatically flashed to give a repeated S.O.S. or similar distress signal by means of a switch driven by clock-work and comprising a roller on a trolley-arm 3 passing over the contacts 4. In the event of a boat foundering, the balloon may be employed to sustain non-swimmers. The distress signal may be carried by aircraft when making sea passages.
