Abstract

704,453. Teaching signalling. WILLS, O. S. D: June 6, 1951 [March 15, 1950], No. 6531/50. Class 118 (2). A model for teaching the recognition of lights carried by vessels at sea comprises a base member a, representing the vessel which is turnable about a vertical axis, and which carries a fore mast c, two members d', d<SP>2</SP> to simulate halyards, a main mast e and two short masts at bow f and stern f<SP>3</SP>. Each of the masts carry electric light bulbs one above the other supplied by parallel electric circuits from a switch or plug board suitably marked so that selected combinations of lights can be lit at will to represent the different nautical combinations. Batteries are contained inside the base a. Additional lights at port g<SP>2</SP>, starboard, and at stern g are provided on the deck and have masks g<SP>3</SP>, g', g' and g' which hide the lights from certain directions and represent obstructions by the structure of a real vessel. Masks d, e<SP>2</SP> are provided on masts c and e for a similar purpose. Alternatively, coloured members may be suspended from hooks J instead of the electric bulbs. The model may be fitted in a case which serves both to house it when not in use and as a turn-table in use.
