Abstract
224,020. Jefcoate, H. J. Aug. 20, 1923. Order apparatus.- A compartmented casing containing lamps normally displays a central light, and dis. plays at will one or more of a number of coloured outer lights. The lamps are wired to a switchboard, and means may be provided for varying the colour of the outer lights. Figs. 1 and 2 show an apparatus for use at back or front of a road-vehicle, the central light M being red or white accordingly. The lamps 5 are mounted within reflectors 3 and show through glazed fronts 4 of the required colour. Fig. 3 shows an apparatus for use on the roof of a road-vehicle for showing both ways. The lamps 5 are mounted in cylindrical casings 3a, and the central lamp shows a white light to the front and a red light to the rear. Fig. 7 shows a revoluble disc 10 with suitable apertures for changing the colours of the outer lights by rotation through 43‹. This may be. operated through a cable attached to a lug 15. In a modification, the central light may take the form of an illuminated number plate. Fig. 8 shows an arrangement for controlling oil or gas lamps which remain continuously alight. A pivoted shutter 16 has an obscuring portion and two coloured apertures 18, 19, and is operated through a cable by means of a lever 22 which may be locked in three positions. The shutter may alternatively be operated pneumatically or electrically. Fig. 9 shows an apparatus for use on ships, either at the mast head to show fore and aft or at the stern, the light M<1> being the mast head light or stem light. An audible signal may be used in conjunction with the visible signals. Combinations of lights may be employed to signal for help in special circumstances, such as a breakdown or want of petrol. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 195,031 and 197,115, [both in Class 118 (ii), Signals].
