INDICATING SIGNAL FOR VEHICLES.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it'known that I, ARTHUR C. SOHROEDER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York,- haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Indicating Signals for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification- The bject of my invention is to provide an indicating signal provided with stop, warning and right and left direction symbols, together with means forilluminating any predetermined symbol, when so desired. 7 A further object is to provide an indicating signal in which the stop symbol will be automatically illuminated when the brake is A further object is to provide certain means whereby the license number plate will be illuminated by the illuminating device for the warning symbol and by the illumi-. nating device for the stop symbol.
A still further object is to provide certain improvements in I the construction, form, arrangement and operation of the signal, whereby the objects above set forth may be easily and simply obtained.

The front plate 10 ofthe casing covers the fronts of the end chambers 6 and 7 and the front middle chamber' 8. A suitable vizor 11 may be provided for the casing, if so desired. I v
The front and rear middle chambers 8 and 9 are provided with ports 12 and 13 through 7 which the license number plate 14 may be illuminated by either or both of the illuminating devices in said front and rear middle chambers, to be hereinafter described. i

There is an illuminating device in each of the chambers hereiriabove referred to. In the present instance I have shown one electric lamp 19 in the front middle chamber 8, immediately back of the warning symbol 17. I have shown one electric lamp 20 in the end chamber 6, back of the right direction symbol and one electric lamp 21 in .the end chamber 7 ,.back of the left direction syinbol '16. I have shown two electric lamps 22 in the rear middle chamber 9, back of the stop. symbol in the transverse partition 5.
I have shown a wiring diagram in Fig. 6 means of which the several lamps are lighted and extinguished as desired. In this diagram the foot brake operating lever is denoted by 23, the manually operated switch by24, the battery by 25 and the ground by 26. A wire 27 leads from the ground to the battery 25. A wire 28 leads fromthe bat- I tery to-the switch 24.. A wire 29 leads from the lamps 22 to the ground wire 32. A wire.

' This lever 23 is normally located in position to close the circuit through the lamp 19. A wire 33 leads from the contact 34 through the warning symbol 17.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a means'whereby the application of the brake by the depression'of the foot brake lever 23 will autonate warning symbol 17 This is accomplished by introducing a spring connecting arm 42 matically extinguish the light 19 in the front middle chamber 8 and light the lamps 22 in the rear middle chamber 9 to illumithe stop symbol through the 'luminated at all times except when the stop symbol is illuminated; the swinging of the switch 24 into engagement with the contacts 37 and 42 will light the lamp 20"to illuminate theright symbol 15, it being understood that thelamp 19 remains lighted for illuminating the warning symbol 17. When the switch 24 is thrown over into en-' gagementwith the contacts 39 and 41, the
lamp 21 is lighted for illuminating the left symbol 16, it being understood that the lamp 19 remains lighted for illuminating the warning symbol 17.
From the above description it will be seen that under normal conditions thewarn1ng symbol 17 will be illuminated by the lighted When the brake is applied to lamp 19. slow up the vehicle to swing the switch 23 from the contact 31 to the contact 34, the
warning symbol illuminating lamp 19 is extinguished and the stop symbol illuminating lamps 22 are lighted, thus rendering the sto symbol visible through the Warning symbol with which it is in alinement. With the'switch 43 open, as in day light, when the warning symbol illuminating device should be extinguished, except when the warning .symbol is desired as a part of one ofthe direction symbols; the
swinging of the switch 24 into engagement with the contacts 37 and 42 will light the lam s 19 and 20 to illuminate the combined rig t and warning symbols. When the switch 24 is swung into engagement with the contacts 39 and 41, the lamps 19 and 21 will be lighted to illuminate the combined left and warning symbols.
What I claim is An indicating signal for vehicles including a casing having longitudinal and transverse partitions dividing the casing into end chambers and front and rear middle chambers, the transverse partition having a light transmitting stop symbol, a front plate having light transmitting right and left direction symbols in front of the end chambers, and a light transmitting warning symbol in front of the front middle chamber in alinement with the stop symbol and arranged to coact with either of the direction symbols, and means for illuminating a symbol or symbols.
