Abstract
Soluble organic compounds (fatty acids, oxyacids, tar acids, &c.) are obtained by the oxidation of coal or other solid combustible matter, such as lignite, peat, wood, &c., by means of air or oxygen under pressure in the presence of aqueous or other incombustible liquid. In an example, powdered bituminous coal mixed with soda solution is treated at 230 DEG C. with air at 30 atmospheres pressure. Instead of alkaline solutions, water, acid solutions, pyridine, carbon tetrachloride, acetylene tetrachloride, &c. may be used; emulsifying-agents such as soap may be added, or catalysts such as iron or manganese salts.
