Abstract

513,801. Purifying liquids. PERMUTIT CO., Ltd. April 20, 1938, No. 11913. Convention date, April 20, 1937. [Class 46] Base-exchange material suitable for use in softening water is obtained by treating carbonaceous material with one or more sulphur or phosphorous acids or acid anhydrides in the presence of an oxidizing agent and/or an oxidation accelerator, which is a compound of chromium, aluminium, manganese, cobalt, nickel or iron. Wood, straw or other cellulose-containing. substance, cork, charcoal, peat, brown. coal, bituminous coal, anthracite, partly-coked coal, pitch, tar, sugar, dextrin, organic acids and their salts, fats and their acids, thickened sulphite liquor and soap are mentioned as suitable carbonaceous materials. As oxidising, agents, nitric acid, chromic acid, permanganates or persulphates may be used. The oxidation accelerators are preferably used in the form of anhydrous salts. An inactive and preferably absorbent carrier may be added to the carbonaceous material before, during, or after the reaction. Specifications 450,574 and 492,316 are referred to.
