Abstract

512,323. Softening water. PERMUTIT CO., Ltd. Feb. 26, 1938, No. 6171. Convention date, April 20, 1937. [Class 46] [Also in Group III] Cations are removed from or exchanged in water by bringing the water into contact with a substance obtained from acid mud or similar waste material by heating the waste material, at a temperature high enough to cause evolution of sulphur dioxide, until a product is obtained possessing cation-exchange or cation-removing powers, and stopping heating before coking of the organic constituents takes place. The heating may be effected at 90-250‹C. The concentration of sulphuric acid in the initial material should preferably be 70 per cent or more and if insufficient sulphuric acid is present, sulphuric acid, fuming sulphuric acid, chlorsulphonic acid, sulphuric anhydride, phosphoric anhydride or mixtures thereof may be added before or during the heating operation. If the material contains considerable sulphuric acid, carbonaceous materials such as wood, straw, cork, charcoal, peat, brown or other coal, anthracite, partially coked coal, pitch, tar, sugar, dextrine, organic acids and their salts, fats and their acids, thickened sulphite liquor and soap may be added to the material before or during the heating operation. The heating is preferably effected in the presence of one or more oxidising agents, and one or more oxidation accelerators may also be present. Suitable oxidising agents are concentrated nitric acid, chromic acid, and potassium, sodium and ammonium permanganates and persulphates. Suitable oxidation accelerators are salts of chromium, aluminium, manganese, cobalt, nickel and iron, preferably in the anhydrous state. An inactive and preferably absorptive carrier such as coke may be added to the material before, during or after heating. The process may be applied to the softening of water, the substances being regenerated in the usual way with regenerating liquids such as salt and acid solutions. Specification 489,338 is referred to.
