Abstract
Crude saw mill waste and similar lignocellulosic materials containing water are broken down from the colloidal condition to facilitate de-watering, by simultaneously heating the material under pressure and admitting oxygen or oxygen-containing gas thereto, the heat being wholly or partly supplied by the exothermic oxidation of the material. Basic reacting substances such as carbonates, hydrates and oxides of the alkaline metals and/or the alkaline earth metals, or catalysts such as iron oxides or vanadium oxides may be added to assist the oxidation, and the mass should be agitated either mechanically or by the admission of steam and/or the gas. The process may be effected continuously or intermittently, and the entering material may be pre-heated by heat-exchange with the treated material or with vapours therefrom. The oxidation may be effected in an acidified phase by adding organic and/or inorganic acids to the material, the resulting hydrolysis of the cellulosic matter forming fermentable sugars. Pressures of from 10 to 200 atmospheres, and temperatures of from 150 DEG to 300 DEG C, and gases containing from 90 to 95 per cent of oxygen are referred to as suitable for the process, although it is stated that oxidation may occur at a temperature as low as 50 DEG C, and that air may be used as the oxidizing gas provided that the pressure of the steam and non-condensable gas supplied to the material is correspondingly increased. The oxidized material may be mixed with crude peat (10 to 15 per cent by weight calculated on a dry basis is mentioned), the de-watering property of the material not being affected by the addition. Specification 3998/15, [Class 50], is referred to.
