Abstract
1494078 Inductors EMI Ltd 6 Jan 1975 [16 Nov 1973] 53364/73 Heading HIT An inductor comprises a coil encapsulated in resin coated ferromagnetic particles adjacent particles being caused to adhere to one another by their coatings. In an example 50/50 nickeliron alloy powder is coated with 0À5% by weight of a thermosetting epoxide resin binder by dissolving the resin in a mixture of 80 parts of acetone to 20 of methanol, adding the powder and evaporating off the solvent whilst stirring the slurry till dry. The coil and coated powder are placed in a container and subjected to hydraulic pressure for several seconds causing the coated powder particles to adhere to one another. The encapsulated coil is then clamped lightly and the resin cured. The inductor is then vacuum impregnated with a low viscosity epoxide resin and cured again. Preferably the length of the coil is not greater than twice its diameter. Alternatives to the 50/50 nickel-iron powder are: 100% nickel, a 47À5% nickel-iron alloy, atomized iron powder, powder made by embrittlement procedures, iron powders made by the carbonyl process, sponge and electrolytically produced powders, or those produced by electrodeposition.
