Abstract

In a method of heating non-conductive material by high-frequency magnetic induction (see Group XI), a thermosetting binder or polymerizable material in liquid or solid form such as phenol-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, alkyd, vinyl or methacrylate resins, or cellulose acetate or nitrate, have associated with them finely-divided magnetic particles having a Curie point within the desired temperature range of heat treatment. The magnetic particles may comprise Heusler alloy, or an alloy of nickel and chromium, copper, manganese or aluminium, examples of suitable proportions being given. In an example, phenolic formaldehyde resin glues (available in U.S.A. as "Catabond" No. 400 or 590) were mixed with finely-divided nickel-copper alloy (20 per cent Cu and 80 per cent Ni) in the proportion of 30 per cent metal to 70 per cent glue and the mixture used in gluing wooden articles together. The particles may also be sprinkled over or impressed into the surface of a film of the plastic, or they may be interposed between two or more such films.ALSO:In a method of heating non-conductive materials by high frequency magnetic fields (see Group XI), adhesive and plastic materials have associated with them a finely divided magnetic substance such as Hensler alloy, or an alloy of nickel and chromium, copper, manganese or aluminium. Examples are given within the following ranges: (1) Hensler alloy; Mn. 6-26.5 per cent.; Al. 7.2-25 per cent.; Cu. 57.2-80.8 per cent. (2) Cr. 0-5 per cent.; remainder Ni. (3) Cu. 0-30 per cent.; remainder Ni. (4) Mn. 0-15 per cent., remainder Ni. (5) Al. 0-5 per cent.; remainder Ni.ALSO:In a method of heating non-conductive materials by high frequency magnetic fields to predetermined limited temperatures (see Group XI) adhesive and plastic materials have associated with them finely divided particles of iron, cobalt or alloys thereof, or Heusler alloy, or an alloy of nickel and chromium, copper, manganese or aluminium (see Group II). The non-conductive material may be a sodium or calcium silicate adhesive, or a thermosetting or thermoplastic substance (see Group IV) or an adhering mixture containing asbestos, mica or fire-clay. The metal particles may be mixed with plastics adapted to be polymerized, hardened or otherwise cured or shaped upon heating in a mould, the mould being of non-conductive material and having a high frequency work coil placed adjacent to its exterior. In each case metal particles are chosen such that they have a Curie point within the desired temperature range of heat treatment of a given material, heating ceasing when this point is reached.
