Abstract

The particles are initially ground to size =10 mu and mixed with a suitable organometallic cpd. which decomposes at 500 degrees C. and used either as a soln. or slurry. The mixt. is heated in a flowing inert atmos. or a vacuum at 500 degrees C. to form a metal vapour which deposits to form a coherent deposit on the alloy particles. Sufficient organometallic cpd. is used to produce a metal vapour partial press. of >=10-7 atmos. The coating comprises 1-5 wt.% of the product. Pref. the magnet alloy is Co-Sm used in conjunction with Cu acetyl-acetonate. A sintering stage in the mfr. of the magnet is avoided and the aligned particles are compacted into shape in a non-magnetic matrix. Oxidn. of the particles is avoided.
