Abstract

1,263,382. Magnetic materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 2 May, 1969 [20 May, 1968], No. 22515/69. Heading H1H. [Also in Divisions C1 and C7] Powdered cobalt-rare earth metal compound, made by reducing in size a bulk body of the compound is contacted with nitric, hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric or acetic acid for a time sufficient to increase the coercive force of the compound. Specified compounds are Co 5 Y, Co 5 Sm and Co 5 M where M is Ce-rich misch metal. Examples describe the treatment of the above compounds, after grinding to particle sizes of < 30 microns to 147 microns, with 1%, 2% and 20% HNO 3 ; 20% HCl; 20% H 3 PO 4 ; 20% H 2 SO 4 and 20% CH 3 COOH (per cent by vol.) for 10 seconds to 90 minutes at about 25‹ C.
