Abstract

1355836 Composite material INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 28 May 1971 [30 June 1970] 17826/71 Heading C3B [Also in Division C7] A composite material comprises an epoxy resin matrix containing films of a polycrystalline metallic material having a grain size of less than 5000Š and an ultimate normalized strength of 10<SP>-3</SP> to 6 x 10<SP>-2</SP>, which films may be coated with a barrier layer to reduce interdiffusion. The films may be in the form of plates, wires or flakes; they may be supported on a substrate. The films may be formed by sputtering, evaporation or electrodeposition and the substrate may be removed prior to incorporation in the matrix by casting, powder metallurgy, compression moulding, infiltration or coextrusion. The films may be oriented in the matrix by application of magnetic, electric or gravitational forces. The use of D.C., A.C. or R.F. sputtering on a plate or wire is described.
