[Also in Division C7] A dispenser cathode, which contains barium compounds as activating material, comprises a porous tungsten body whose emissive surface is coated with a thin layer of an osmium-iridium alloy containing 30 to 70 atom per cent of osmium or of an osmium-ruthenium alloy containing 20 to 80 atom per cent of osmium. The alloy layer may be applied by sputtering and is preferably a few hundred to 10,000 Š thick. The dispenser cathode shown has a store 3 of emissive material comprising 60% by weight of tungsten powder and 40% by weight of bariumcalcium aluminate covered by porous tungsten plate 4 with a thin coating 5 of osmium-iridium (50-50 atom per cent) having a thickness of 2000 Š. The dispenser cathode may alternatively comprise an impregnated tungsten block. The alloy layer may be formed by sputtering in argon at 1 mm. Hg, and the cathodes may subsequently be sintered in hydrogen at 1 atm. pressure at 1350‹ C. to improve adhesion.
