Abstract

1316279 Magnetic laminates D BURKHOLTER 9 June 1970 [12 June 1969] 27955/70 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions G5 and H1] A flexible composite sheet for magnetic retention of a data carrier, Fig. 3, consists of a foil 22 (e.g. paper; plastic; metal foil; textile, asbestos, or glass fibre; metal wire; or a felt, tissue or net), a magnetizable foil 23 of iron or nickel and a coating 24 of permanently magnetized steel, steel alloy, or ferrite powder mixed with a plastic binder and applied in plural thin layers. The latter coating is strip magnetized at 24a, separated by unmagnetized strips 24b; and successive strips 24a have alternate polarities so as to firmly attract the data carrier foil. The magnetizable material of layer 24 may be evenly distributed throughout the binder before magnetization or may be magnetized before the binder has set, so that the magnetizable powder is concentrated in the magnetized strips and removed from the non- magnetized strips; or if ferrite is used the particles may be magnetically oriented before setting.
