902,838. Magnetic structures. AGFA A.G. Sept. 18, 1959 [Sept. 19, 1958], No. 31894/59. Class 38 (2). In manufacturing magnetic record comprising a layer of iron oxide particles disposed in a hardenable binder and applied to a plastic base to form a tape or to a plate or cylinder the particles are orientated, whilst the binder is still moist, by a magnetic field or fields so that the direction of orientation is different at different parts of the layer. For a disc the particles may be orientated circularly around the disc as shown in Fig. 1b by rotating the disc above a magnet 2. Fig. 2a shows a tape wherein the main direction of orientation is transverse to the tape, but a narrow band 3 has longitudinal orientation. The magnetic particles may be acicular iron oxide 1Á x 0.1Á, and the binder may be lacquer, the layer thickness being 10-20 Á.
