Abstract
652,498. Electromagnetic recording apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 15, 1948, No. 24187. [Class 40 (ii)] A magnetic recording medium such as a tape of cellulose acetate covered with a coating of ferric oxide, has one or more discrete electrically-conducting areas comprising a thin layer of conducting, non-magnetic material applied to said medium directly, or with only a thin layer of adhesive between the material and the medium. The conductive coating may be used to control electric switching or control means during the operation of the record such as a changeover operation between two recording devices during continuous recording, and may consist of pieces of gold or other metal leaf which are affixed to the record by means of an oil base varnish. Alternatively, a thermoplastic adhesive may be applied to the metal leaf which is then transferred to the record by hot-pressing. Other means may be used such as graphite powder in liquid form which is painted on the tape or disc, or silver or gold may be applied to the oxide coating by sputtering, followed by electroplating.
