Abstract

623,173. Variable speed friction gearing. EVERETT, EDGCUMBE, & CO., Ltd., and COLEMAN, C. April 24, 1947, No. 10996. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii)] In friction gearing of the kind having an edge friction disc 3 traversed across the face of a disc 1, contact pressure between the discs. is supplied by forming one disc of magnetic material and the other as a permanent magnet made of a highly magnetic alloy such as one of aluminium, cobalt, nickel and iron. As shown, the disc 1 is of such an alloy and is axially polarized. The engaging face of the disc 1 or the edge of the disc 3 may be plated as with non-magnetic german silver, or a thin wear ring 5 or a tyre (not shown), of non-magnetic material, may be secured to the face of the disc 1 or the rim of the disc 3 respectively.
