Abstract
1490400 Mechanical jacks R A LISTER & CO Ltd 15 April 1976 [15 April 1975] 15342/75 Heading B8J A mechanical jack includes a holding pawl 23 and a pawl 17 to be actuated by a pivotally mounted handle 5, the pawls 23, 17 being urged normally into engagement with a load-carrying rack by respective springs 21, 18. A first spring member 30, part of a hairpin-type spring 12, stronger than the spring 18 is arranged to rerelease the pawl 17 from engagement with the rack 3 when a releasing plunger 9 carried by the handle 5 is moved into a rack-lowering position (as shown) and when the handle 5 occupies an upper position, Fig. 1 (not shown). A second spring member 11, also part of the spring 12, stronger than the spring 21 is arranged to release the pawl 23 from engagement with the rack 3 towards the end of a downstroke of the handle 5 with the plunger 9 occupying its racklowering position, the downward movement of the handle 5 simultaneously urging the pawl 17 into engagement with an upper portion of the rack 3, the bias of the spring member 11 being removed during subsequent movement of the handle 5 toward its upper position to enable the pawl 23 to engage a further portion of the rack 3. According to the invention the pawl 17 is arranged to be urged by a resiliently moveable cam 34, shown as a spring 35 bolted to casing 1 acting on a pin 33 projecting from the pawl 17, into engagement with an upper portion of the rack 3 towards the end of the downstroke of the handle 5, with the plunger 9 in its rack-lowering position.
