Abstract

1486778 Stereophonic record cutters J MARTIN 29 Jan 1975 [22 May 1974] 22818/74 Heading H4J A stereophonic cutter of the moving coil type has a cutting stylus holder 18 connected by two rods 20, mutually at right angles, to respective moving coils 16 in the air gaps of magnetic circuits 12, 14. Each magnetic circuit uses an annular permanent magnet 22 and polepieces 24 and 26. Each polepiece 24 has a central boss 24a embraced by a coil 16. Each coil 16 consists of a windings impregnated with epoxy resin and may have a main driving winding and a feedback winding. Feedback signals from the feedback windings are amplified by a directly coupled amplifier and are fed back to the input of the stereo signal power amplifier. Each boss 24a has a bore 24b in which is secured a rod 20 by silicone rubber 32. The remainder of the bore 24b is filled with silicone grease. A cross-shaped member 30 is adhered to each rod 20 and the outer ends of its legs 30b are secured to the coil. A connecting tube (not shown) may be provided between the member 30 and coil 16. A damper 34 surrounds the otherwise open parts of the rods 20. This includes a support plate 36 (Fig. 2) fixed to a back plate (not shown) to which the magnetic circuits 12 and 14 are also fixed. L- shaped brackets 40 on opposite sides of the rods 20 are held to support plate 36 by screws 42 and damping layers 44. A screw 46 varies the distance apart of the brackets 40 and hence the compression of layers 44. The rods 20 are of stainless steel (e.g. hypodermic needles), stylus holder 18 is of aluminium and the cross-shaped members 30 are of hard laminated plastics material. An alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) has each feedback coil (52) stationary and physically separated from the main driving coil (54) and co-operates with a solid metal armature (56) secured to its respective rod 20 and cross-shaped member 30. The stylus holder (60) is provided with a tapered threaded portion (60a) for receiving the stylus and a tapered nut (62) for co-operation with the threaded portion (60a) to securely clamp the stylus. A torsion rod (64) secured to the rods 20 or stylus holder and to the back plate 38 further assists damping of the rods 20.
