Abstract

991, 890. Eddy current testing apparatus. BRITISH NON-FERROUS METALS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Dec. 21, 1961 [Dec. 21, 1960], No. 43940/60. Heading G1N. A coil assembly for eddy current testing comprises a pair of coil sandwiches each having a primary coil 10 sandwiched between a pair of coils 12, 14 which may all be single turn coils of 0. 002 inch axial length, the coils being screened by discs 16,18 of magnetic material of high permeability. The coils 12, 14 of each sandwich are connected in series phase-assisting and the outputs of the two sandwiches are connected differentially to give a null response in the absence of a flaw. The assembly with tubular insulated spacers is secured by thin paper discs impregnated with an adhesive epoxy resin. Each coil is an annular copper disc having a radial slit and tapered lugs for external connection, and the magnetic screens are also slit radially to reduce hysteresis losses. The primary coils are fed by a 10 kc/s oscillator through a 15 watt amplifier, and the output from the coils 12, 14 after amplification in a frequency selective amplifier 32, is balanced to give a null output in a balancing unit 33 fed also from amplifier 28 in the absence of a flow. The output is applied to a recorder 36 via a phase sensitive detector 35. The arrangement may be passed through a tube or may be passed over a rod or a plane surface.
