Abstract

1486473 Gravure printing plates GRAVURE RESEARCH INSTITUTE Inc 10 Sept 1974 [19 Sept 1973] 39477/74 Heading B6C Individual gravure plates, e.g. single-page or double-page plates, are attached to printing cylinders by providing a non-resilient magnetically attractable backing, e.g. steel, to the plates and making the printing cylinder magnetic. It is thereby possible to mount a plurality of such plates on a rotogravure cylinder in abutting relationship without any consequent loss in printing quality. Any gaps between plates may be filled with non-porous, ink-insoluble filler such as epoxy resin (13), Fig. 4 (not shown). Preferably the leading and trailing edges of plates 2 are slightly angled to the axis of rotation of magnetic cylinder 10, Fig. 3; alternatively the doctor blade may be angled. When used in an offset press, Fig. 6 (not shown), the blanket 36 on offset cylinder 34 may have undercuts 50, 52 corresponding to the gaps between plates.
