Abstract
1485359 Boundary layer control R A BROWN 7 Aug 1974 [8 May 1973] 21856/73 Heading F2R [Also in Division B7] A device, e.g. an aircraft capable of generating vertical lift comprises eight discs arranged in two tiers, each device comprising an annular planar member 1 surrounded by a further member spaced therefrom to form a circumferential duct 2 and being formed at its perimeter to extend said duct upwardly and inwardly to form a nozzle 4. The inner peripheral portion of member 1 is coned upwardly to form, with a downwardly coned portion of a duct 6, an annular diverging duct 7 having an outlet nozzle. A duct 3 is formed in the centre of each disc through which air is driven by a compressor, not shown, the flow passing, as indicated by arrows, radially outwards through duct 2 and then through nozzle 4 to flow over the upper surface of member 1 and out through duct 7. The differential pressures on the top of member 1 and the bottom of member 6 generate a vertical lift force.
