Abstract

921,300. V.T.O.L. aircraft. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 8, 1961 [March 11, 1960], No. 8464/61. Class 4. In a V.T.O.L. system for aircraft, a duct 11 in a wing or in the fuselage has a fan 12 disposed therein to force air downwardly therethrough to provide lift on the aircraft, and boundary layer control means is provided downstream of the fan to spread or diffuse the fan discharge air along the underside of the wing or fuselage in the vicinity of the duct opening. Control of the boundary layer of air and the prevention of separation of the air flow from the undersurface of the fuselage 10 is effected by sucking off the boundary layer into or ejection of high pressure air from suitable manifold means 15. Other embodiments are described in which the fan is located in a wing. By effectively increasing the discharge area of the fan the lift available from the fan per horsepower delivered to the fan is increased,
