Abstract

In the event of engine failure the wing ensures safety by operating as a parachute. The wing (1) is mounted above a fuselage (2) and contains a lift fan (8) drawing air through an intake (7) and delivering it through a duct (10) to discharge nozzles (11, 12) in the region of the elevator (5) and rudder (4) for propulsion. Louvres, fitted to the air intake are opened for take-off and progressively closed as forward speed is increased. Suction on the upper wing surface due to the air aspirated generates lift for take-off, whereas aerodynamic lift is generated at speed, when additional thrust units will be required. Coanda effect due to the high discharge air speed augments the low speed lift generated by intake suction.
