Abstract
1319428 Aerodynamic lifting device CHANDLER EVANS Inc 7 Sept 1971 [14 Sept 1970] 41689/71 Heading B7W [Also in Division F2] A device for generating vertical lift comprises a housing 114 for a fan gas turbine engine, the housing being extended by a downwardly and outwardly flared skirt 112 formed on its upper surface with four equi-spaced channel members 118, 120, 122 each having a housing 124 communicating with the interior of housing 114 and forming a nozzle 126. Further nozzles 134 are formed between the housing 114 and the skirt 112 and high-velocity air from the engine fan is delivered to all the nozzles to flow over the surfaces 112 and 122. Each surface 122 is profiled as shown in Fig. 4, air from nozzle 126 expands freely to an upper boundary 136 with adherence to surface 122. This produces a shock wave 137 extending from separation point S1 to a point R1 on surface 122. The supersonic air stream flowing along surface 122 separates at point S2 and re-attaches at point R1 creating therebetween a low pressure zone. The surface 122 is profiled to bend downward from point R1 to achieve a second separation at R1 with reattachment at R2 thereby forming a second low pressure zone. Each surface 122 is formed with a port 146 controlled by a valve 148, which when opened admits air at atmospheric pressure to the low pressure zone on the upper surface to destroy the lift and thereby achieve an out-of-balance control effect on the device. A load carrying compartment may be suspended from the underside of the device.
