Abstract

1,032,113. Boundary layer control. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS (AIRCRAFT) Ltd., J. WOTTON, and D. W. FREE. March 5, 1963 [March 16, 1962], No. 10233/62. Heading F2R. [Also in Divisions B7 and F1] In an aircraft engine jet-pipe assembly (Fig. 7, not shown), the after part of the lower wall is constituted by a jet-deflection flap 22, the forward end of which is formed by a drum 25 tangential to the adjacent after end of an expanded portion 19 of the lower wall. The flap 22 is rotatable about the axis 26 of the drum 25. In order to preserve optimum gas flow over the surface of the flap 22, more particularly when this is in the vertical lift or reversed-thrust positions, the boundary layer of the jet stream is re-energized by expelling compressed air or other gas through one or more transverse slits 80 formed in the surface of the drum 25 and at an acute angle to it, suitable connections 81 being made between the slots 80 and a compressor. Means may be provided whereby air or other gas is caused to issue from the slits 80, for augmentation of the boundary layer, automatically when the flap 22 is deflected from the forwardthrust position. If desired, air or other gas may also be piped to a slit 82 in a flexible lip 30 on the expanded portion 19.
