Abstract
739,500. Jet-propulsion plant. ESSEX AERO, Ltd., and CROSS, R. J. Aug. 28, 1953 [March 23, 1953; July 2, 1953], Nos. 23698/53, (divided out of 7989/53), and 18421/53. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] A jet pipe is truncated along planes 41, 42, Fig. 1 (18421/53), the missing part of the pipe being replaced by grilles 46, 47 of deflecting vanes, normally faired outside by a forwardly retractable member 51, and on the inside by vanes 43, 44. Forward movement of the grilles rotates vanes 43, 44 about pivot 45 to meet at the centre of the pipe and deflect the jet towards the grilles. In another version, the grilles and vanes 43, 44 are provided with racks interconnected by a pinion so that the vanes are swung inward by rearward motion of the grilles. Another embodiment is shown in Fig. 1 (23698/53), where the jet pipe 10 is flattened and widened at 11 to emerge from a wing as a shallow rectangular tube. In Fig. 14 (18421/53), the jet stream is bifurcated by a wedge 109 pivoted at 140 to deflect the jet through outlet 107 or 108 or both. In Fig. 18 (18421/53), is shown a modification in which a part of the jet stream is bled off by a vane 156 through guides 158 and a channel 154, to counteract the pitching moment produced by deflection of the main stream by grille 151. In normal flight, channel 154 is faired in by vanes 156, 159.
